Atmospheric Environments, But Repetitive Gameplay
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End for the Nintendo DS tries to convey the epic atmosphere of the film. In my opinion, the game is a mix of action and puzzles in a side-scrolling adventure. The style and gameplay are kept simple, which might actually be the charm for some players. The environments are atmospherically designed, especially considering the limitations of the DS, but I found the battles quickly became repetitive and lacked the impact you expect in a good action game.

The story is told in brief cutscenes and unfortunately lacks the flair and humour that make the films so enjoyable. The controls are decent, but I noticed that they can feel a bit clunky during the platform sections, which can disrupt the flow of the game. For a handheld game, that's definitely a downside. Fans of the film will appreciate the familiar setting, but I think the game never really manages to convince as a fully-fledged action-adventure game.

If you’re a big fan of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, you might enjoy the familiar characters and the atmosphere the game tries to create. But for me, it felt like a missed opportunity to really delve deeper into both the story and the gameplay. It's fun for a one-off, but I wouldn't be quick to pick it up again.

Fun for fans of Pirates, but not groundbreaking gameplay
The obligatory action-adventure game based on the film, which they always used to make from every blockbuster. In Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End you have battles, exploration, and treasure collecting (because: pirate!). The fights feel stiff, inaccurate, and you just mash the button as fast as you can, but it offers enough variety in missions and environments to keep you occupied for a bit.

It’s obviously not a groundbreaking game, but hey, as a movie tie-in and if you’re a fan of the Pirates series, there are certainly worse DS games out there. You’ll get a few hours of fun out of it.
