The gameplay of Star Fox Command consists of two main components: turn-based strategy on the map of the Lylat system and the classic Star Fox aerial battles in first and third person. In the strategic sections, you plan your attacks by mapping out routes on the touchscreen, taking into account fuel and the position of enemies. The goal is to strategically use your Arwing and other ships to eliminate enemies before they reach the base or other vulnerable points. You can't simply fly to every enemy ship; you need to think carefully about your next move.
The aerial battles themselves are action-packed and allow you to shoot down enemies by using the touchscreen and stylus to steer your ship. This control scheme is new for the Star Fox series and may take some getting used to, but it works surprisingly well. By tapping and sliding on the screen, you can steer your Arwing with precision. The game also offers power-ups and items to make battles even more interesting.
For a DS game, Star Fox Command looks visually impressive. The Arwing ships and enemies are clearly and detailed designed. The environments are colourful and range from open skies to dark enemy bases. Although the graphics do not reach the same level as those on consoles like the GameCube, they are certainly well executed for a handheld.
In terms of sound, Star Fox Command does not disappoint. The soundtrack remains true to the series with epic tracks that fit the battles and the more dramatic strategic sections. Unfortunately, the voice acting is less prominent than in earlier entries in the series. The communication between characters now mainly happens through text rather than spoken dialogue, which I found disappointing. The voices of the characters are so iconic.
The difficulty level of Star Fox Command is reasonably balanced, but it can be frustrating due to the controls and the required strategy. The game offers multiple endings, and some storylines are more challenging, requiring more precise movements and tactics.
Having multiple endings provides a certain replay value for players who want to see all possible outcomes. However, the gameplay can become repetitive in the long run. The battles become somewhat predictable.
Star Fox Command features a wireless multiplayer mode, where you can compete against each other. Although the multiplayer is not particularly extensive, it does provide extra fun with friends. Each battle is different when playing against real people, keeping it enjoyable for longer!
Star Fox Command is a bold and unique addition to the Star Fox series with various innovative elements. The combination of strategy and aerial battles offers a new gameplay experience, and the branching storylines provide interesting narrative elements. It may not be for everyone, but it's certainly an entertaining game for the Nintendo DS.
